TERRA AUSTRALIS INCOGNITA, the Unknown Southern Land, lies at the bottom of the world surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is a place of profound beauty, isolation, and wilderness - a world blanketed with ice at times 15,000 feet thick and 60,000 years old.

Magnificent South Georgia Island, British territory, lies at the bottom of the world surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is a place of incredible beauty with its jagged peaks rising up like a flooded Swiss Alps from the ocean depths. Glaciers and icecaps blanket the interior and wildlife and seabirds cover the shore. Lying outside Antarctica’s winter pack ice, South Georgia is the only outcrop of land for 500 miles. Wildlife rush ashore in the spring to breed and our expedition coincides with this enormous migration. Thousands upon thousands of King Penguins. Beaches after beach of battling elephant seals. Ten-foot wandering albatross dance with the hope of finding a mate. All this and more in a pristine wilderness setting amidst the Antarctic Ocean.  (Fur seal. Photo by Felicia Ennis)

Highlights:

  • Witness the battles of four-ton breeding elephant seals.
  • Discover the abandoned stations and legacy of a South Georgia's whaling industry.
  • Hike Shackleton's routes across the island.  Pay respect to his grave site.
  • Photograph 10-foot wandering albatross on their nest and in flight.
  • Surround yourself with 200,000 pairs of 3-foot-high King penguins.
  • sail into the narrow Drygalskiy fjord.

Antarctica was truly like nothing else I have experienced. Waking up to a golden sunrise, shimmering on glassy still water, surrounded by huge, floating chunks of ice. I still get the chills thinking about it, and it stirs something deep inside me. I went thinking that it was going to be a once in a lifetime adventure. I came back certain that I will go there again.
